Mayor Tom Leppert Founder of Tom Leppert Intern Fellows
Letter of Support for Education is Freedom
I am pleased to be writing in support of Education is Freedom (EIF). Its program in the Dallas Independent School District, EIF Dallas, has been instrumental in assisting Dallas students achieve academic success. The District is now on a path to graduating students who are workforce and college ready, and EIF Dallas will continue to play a significant role in helping students excel academically and ultimately reach college. EIF Dallas has developed a comprehensive programmatic effort that has had a very positive impact on participating high schools in Dallas. I’m proud that EIF Dallas is a part of my initiative “Igniting Opportunity for the Children of Dallas” and the program is a key component in the blueprint for change I developed for the city of Dallas. As a result of our partnership, EIF Dallas is on a path to expand its successful model into additional high schools in the district, and EIF Dallas students are directly served by my Intern Fellows program which is currently in its second successful summer. In addition, I believe that EIF Dallas’ recently implemented middle school component will allow the program to have an even greater impact, since it will be reaching our students earlier in their academic careers. In sum, our office fully supports EIF Dallas’ efforts and appreciates all that EIF does for the Dallas community by preparing its youth for success and by profoundly impacting the lives of the young people in the city of Dallas. Please free to call me with any questions.
Mayor's Chesapeake Energy Scholarship Fund Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, whose mayoral campaign platform focuses upon education, is a major supporter of EIF and has chosen EIF Dallas to oversee and administer all his "Igniting Opportunity for the Children of Dallas" educational initiatives: the Mayor's Intern Fellows program Ready to Read @ Dallas program, Operation Front Door and the Mayor's Chesapeake Energy Scholarship Fund. The Mayor's Chesapeake Energy Scholarship Fund was established by the Chesapeake Energy Corporation with the goal to make higher education possible for minority and socially disadvantaged students. Through this fund, which is awarded exclusively to EIF Dallas students, up to $20,000 is awarded per year to each of the selected students for the costs of tuition, fees and books. In fact, Mayor Leppert donated his mayor's salary ($200,000) to the Mayor's Chesapeake Energy Scholarship Fund. Nearly $2 million in funds are available to EIF Dallas students through this scholarship program. |
