JuliaHigh School Senior
Julia, is a sweet, quiet senior at North Dallas who fights an internal battle between giving in to her timidity and stepping up to a larger destiny. “I’m kind of shy,” she says, barely above a whisper. “It was hard at school at first, back then I was, like, more shy. Now, it’s not like I want attention, but it’s more-- I want to be a leader.”Julia tends to stand at the periphery of groups, gathering information at her own, measured pace; you can almost see the cogs churning in her head. This senior class vice-president and member of the drill team wants to go to college, study business, meet new people and experience new worlds.“I like to start in Dallas, mostly and then afterwards, when I get really good, I’d like to go nationwide. You have to start small,” she says. Her role model is her older sister, who did not have the benefit of EIF and is now one of Julia’s biggest supporters when it comes to continuing her education. “Her dream was to go to college but she wasn’t legal and she didn’t have that much help from the counselors or anything so she didn’t go,” Julia says. “But, like, now [college] is my sister’s dream for me and everybody wants me to go, especially my mom. They always say, ‘We’ll find a way to pay, even if we don’t have a way, we’ll find a way.”
