Ivette"I felt invisible because I didn`t speak English and couldn`t understand people”


Ivette is anything but invisible, and yet this is the word she uses to describe herself when she arrived here just seven years ago at age 11. She struggled to learn English and with the help of her teachers she eventually mastered it. It took her father five years to relocate his family to the United States, but shortly thereafter he had to return to Mexico to continue working. Ivette still feels blessed that she was able to come to the United States legally. She is undeniably optimistic, with an intoxicating enthusiasm and is most excited about her future. She sees college as the only route to building that future. Although her mother never completed the 6th grade, her parents have always encouraged her in academics.

Ivette is enrolled in Advanced Placement English, Advanced Placement Government, and Advanced Placement Biology. Outside of academics, she is an active member and current captain of the Drill team, a member of the Family Consumer Science Career Prep and on the swim team. With her active life she works closely with EIF Dallas to maintain a college exploration and application schedule (tutoring, campus tours, essay workshops and application submissions).

Ivette was always interested in health and medicine. A recent EIF-sponsored health career fair revealed the many options available within this field and Ivette is now exploring options to work with children; she has expressed an interest in becoming a pediatrician. She plans to be a pre-med major when she starts college. Although she has not narrowed down which college she wants to attend, her applications reflect a willingness to strive and succeed independently.
