Personal Development

There's more to succeeding in life than just making the grades; that's why a major component of the EIF program is teaching life skills and exposing students to different cultures through field trips and other activities. Eight times a year, the HEAs or a guest speaker teaches a G3 Workshop on topics ranging from How to Dress to the importance of Time Management.

Social Capital Building Whether it's a field trip to see the movie "I.O.U. USA," a visit to see a traveling exhibit at the museum, or time spent doing volunteer work in the community, EIF strives to expose our students to activities that increase social awareness. It is our belief well-rounded individuals make for well-rounded students.

Workshop Examples
Time Management As our students lives get busier, developing excellent time management skills becomes essential to success. In this workshop, students are taught the importance of time management and given several tools to help them practice their skills. From blocking off time in half hour segments based on current activities to long-term planning, students learn how to make the most of their time.

Life Map Before you can achieve it, you've got to see it. Asking our students to imagine their lives fifteen years from now and create a life map can help make the intangible, tangible. Students use markers and magazine clippings to create a collage illustrating their goals for the future, incorporating college dreams, career choices, hobbies, and family aspirations.

Decision Making Rather than having a concrete process for decision making, students often make decisions haphazardly. Teaching them a decision making method allows students to think through each option and connect the choice to its respective consequence(s). Students are presented scenarios and asked to make a decision based on the proven SODAS* technique. Students then discuss their choices in a larger group. * (Situation, Option, Advantages, Disadvantages, and Solution developed in 1974 by Kifer, Lewis, Green & Phillips)

College Selection Many students don't understand the difference between a technical school and a private university. This workshop covers the differences and provides a worksheet to help students identify which characteristics they prefer in a college, giving focus to their search and encouraging them to look beyond the name of the school.

College 101 With questions and answers about college life set up like the game show Jeopardy, everybody wins during this presentation. Categories cover Student Union, Staying Busy, Who to Talk to, and Money Smarts with point levels ranging from 100 to 400. Students choose the category and point level, then try to come up with the correct question to win a prize.
